MUSEE D'ART MODERNE CLIGMAN DONATION
Abbaye de Fontevraud
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Edgar Degas, Maurice de Vlaminck, Albert Marquet, Kees van Dongen, Robert Delaunay, Juan Gris, André Derain… So many names that have marked the history of art and which appear today in the astonishing collection of the Modern Art Museum of Fontevraud.
The presentation of a private collection escapes by nature the classifications traditionally made for encyclopedic purposes. The course of the museum is therefore not strictly chronological but, based on confrontations and dialogues of objects, offers frequent back and forth between eras and geographical places. It is not a question of reconstituting the universe of the collectors but of evoking it, to then invite to a voyage of sensations, by the discovery of works of various natures, revealing a history of taste. The rooms, punctuated by the marked architecture of the 18th century building, unfold according to a common thread linked to the strong characters of the collection (intimacy, modernity, realism, School of Paris, etc.), sometimes interrupted by rooms stamped " the passion of the collector", revealing the favorites of donors: this is the case of the glassworks by Maurice Marinot in the vaulted room of the old bakery, or the sculptures by Germaine Richier in the passage coachman.
